CIT 123 - Introduction to Heavy, Highway and Site Construction
4 Credits
The study of the materials, methods and techniques used in site work, highway, utility, and other heavy construction projects. The primary emphasis is construction equipment selection, production calculations, and material handling. Topics will include site layout, aggregates and soils classifications, earthmoving basics, cranes and lifting equipment, concrete and asphalt production and paving. The study of the methods and techniques used in blueprint reading for heavy, highway, and site construction. The laboratory will cover the use of construction drawings, scales, orthographic views, symbols, sections, and graphical interpretation, specific to the heavy and highway construction industry to include topographic maps, profiles, engineering scales, and cross sections.
Prerequisite: MTH 104 OR MTH 152 OR Placement at Math Level 8 OR Higher OR Permission of Program Coordinator. Completion of CIT 122-Elements of Building Construction is recommended.
Course Learning Outcomes
1. Outline the construction process for heavy, highway, and site construction.
2. Select appropriate construction materials from the specifications submitted.
3. Perform a quantity survey for the materials selected.
4. Compile a quantity list and calculate associated costs of resources.
5. Set-up a layout plan from the site drawings.
6. Select the appropriate construction equipment required for a given situation and to determine the production rates of each.
7. Complete and interpret a Mass-Haul Diagram.
8. Understand the different means and methods of different sitework operations.
9. Participate in a Bid Letting for the assigned semester long project.
