TRS 090 - Academic English Essentials
4 Credits
This course helps students progress in their academic reading, writing, thinking, and learning skills. Students cultivate confidence and self-assurance by developing and strengthening reading strategies; improving academic literacy; expanding vocabulary techniques; engaging in the writing process; and improving grammar and mechanics to produce unified, coherent text. Immersion in contextualized, culturally responsive, multi-modal materials helps learners become better writers through reading and better readers through writing. Skills developed in this course are immediately applicable to students’ other college coursework and experiences.
Co-requisite(s): TRS 091 concurrently and COS 101 or COS 133.
Course Learning Outcomes
1. Apply reading strategies to a variety of contexts
2. Demonstrate reading comprehension
3. Engage with diverse perspectives by listening and withholding judgement about the new or unfamiliar
4. Engage in the writing process to create coherent texts
5. Demonstrate proficiency with laboratory exercises in reading and writing to supplement Academic English Essentials, such as the reading process, the writing process, or articulating rhetorical structures in text
6. Apply the conventions of standard citation styles, such as MLA, and other relevant formats
